In Times Like These...

It's good to have a columnist or two in your pocket.

UPDATE: So much for Woodenesque. May I suggest Hazzardesque?

UPDATE 2: I WAS hoping for better results Thursday at Staples Center until I realized UCLA was playing. Coach Ben Howland is 29-27 in two years at UCLA. Tell me today what you'd be saying if Steve Lavin had the same start.

Ummmmm.....I suppose he doesn't have in mind Woodenesque?

  • Uhh, I think everyone is going to give Howland 2 more years. Nobody expected instant success, and the fact they are even sniffing the tourney in year two is great. A coach needs 3-4 years to clean out guys left over from the predecessor and get his own guys in, it's not like they can just take scholarships away at will. Everyone remembers Lavin's last year, so any amount of winning is a plus.

Howland also gets a lot of credit, and deservedly so, for what people expect in future performance. His freshman class this year has been stellar, and if his next class is as good UCLA will be back atop the Pac10.

If UCLA makes it in this year, that'll be two teams Howland brought to the tourney this year, as Pitt is still basically teamed by his players.

With all that said, I do think that the only reason UCLA will get in this year is due to a generally weak field. But, I feel that way about a lot of the Big East, 10 and 12 teams as well.
