Apocalypse Now

Steve and I watched yesteday's game together at his house (he's got the fabulous MLB Extra Innings package); it was all great fun until the Valentin error. Steve's immediate reaction was one that sent his kids scurrying into their mother's arms--the apocalypse seemed imminent. While I was frustrated as well, my frustration was offset by my satisfaction with Derek Lowe's performance. Let's keep things in perspective--if we are going to have weaknesses that need to be replaced midsesason, I'd much rather have it be at third base than in the starting rotation. Solid third basemen are almost a dime a dozen in the bigs; above-average starters who eat up innings like Lowe did yesterday are precious metals in comparison.

So even if the Valentin experiment doesn't work out--and I'm not going to make judgments after one lousy game--having a hole to fill at third base isn't the worst problem to have. We still have 161 games to figure this thing out.

  • One thing to note--BP says that Valentin might be a poor fit for third since his best attribute is his range and his worst is his tendency to kick balls. Third base is more about reaction time and hands than sheer range, apparently, so yesterday might have been a preview of more misplays to come. I am not sure, though, why Izturis could not play more up the middle to give Valentin the chance to use his range?
