Why Even Ask?

Look at that, the best managers are the guys with the best records in their leagues! Wow. Insightful analysis. Really.

  • This is one of the things that really drives me nuts. People evaluate a manager based on the record of the team (last I checked - the manager never does anything on the filed other than run his mouth).

Managers need to be evaluated based on the choices they make and whether those choices improve or lessen the teams chances of winning at the time the decision was made.

A good choice is not one that works out. And a good manager is not one who happens to be aon a team that wins a lot of games.

This is something lost on almost everyone.

If Tracy was managing the Devil Rays they would still suck. If Pinella was managing the Dodgers the Dodgers would still be a great team. Swaping the two would not suddenly make Tracy a terrible manager and Pinella a good one.

Performance analysis of managers is a difficult and not a well explored feild. But that's no excuse for commentors falling back on the W-L record of a team as a lazy way out.
